How To Attract Birds To Your Yard
- Provide a varied range of different food types in different feeders. As different species have different favorite foods and different preferred methods of feeding this will increase your chances of attracting different species. It's a good idea to consider the species of birds you wish to attract and then plan your feeders appropriately to optimize your chances of attracting them.
- Make sure your bird food is always fresh - don't leave old or damp and moldy feed in your feeders. The birds will soon go elsewhere for their food source or worse, if they don't, they may get diseases from your feed.
- Provide sources of fresh water - bird baths, ponds, misters, etc. Make sure the water doesn't become stagnant. Installing moving sources of water such as fountains of streams are a good way to do this, but if this isn't practical for your circumstances then make sure you change the water in bird baths on a regular basis, and use standard pond management techniques to prevent pond water from stagnating.
- Feed consistently - don't leave the birds without food for a period of time or, again, they'll soon go elsewhere.
- Provide an environment where insects can survive as this will attract insect-eating birds. This means not using insecticides in your garden.
- Provide safe places to eat, away from predators. And don't allow other animals to steal your food. For example, consider installing a squirrel proof bird feeder.
- Install bird houses to provide safe havens for the birds and to give them somewhere to roost. Again, consider the type of bird you wish to attract and select appropriate bird houses.
Follow these simple tips on how to attract birds to your yard and hopefully you'll soon have lots of beautiful new visitors to your yard.
